VP TO RELEASE A DENNIS BROWN BOX SET

VP will be releasing a three-disc compilation of the late Dennis Brown's hit singles. The Crown Prince of Reggae - Singles (1972-1985), will be reissued by 17 North Parade, a VP Records imprint, on November 16.

The collection featuring anthems such as Revolution and Promised Land to lesser-known works like Satisfaction Feeling and the gritty musical ultimatum Praise Without Raise.

The bonus DVD sees Dennis Brown live in concert, backed by Lloyd Parks and We the People Band, in a 1979 performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival and The Swiss Music Festival. It also includes liner notes from journalist Carter Van Pelt, in a fitting tribute to this iconic artist and more.

BUJU BANTON'S BAIL AND STIPULATIONS

BUJU BANTON's motion for bail was approved on Thursday, October 14, 2010 in the Sam M Gibbons Federal Court in the United States. He is still not in the clear as his lawyer will now have to seek bond in the immigration court to prevent his deportation to Jamaica.

To make bail, Banton would have to post $250,000 — secured by the equity in a friend's house — wear an electronic monitor and undergo drug testing.

Banton also would have to pay for around-the-clock security, probably off-duty sheriff's deputies, to watch his every move.

It is not clear when recording reggae artiste, Buju Banton, will be released from jail. If Buju's attorney manages to make the said arrangements, the US government still could request another hearing before he is released.

BUJU BANTON'S 9TH STUDIO ALBUM THE PROPHETIC "BEFORE THE DAWN"

Despite attracting mainstream attention with his current case before the US Court, Buju Banton's album Before the Dawn was unable to unseat Distant Relatives by Nas and Damian Marley, from the top of the Billboard Reggae album tally.

The ten track album Before the Dawn debuted at number two on the chart. It debuted at number 26 on the Heatseekers Album chart.

The album was slated to drop in the US, Canada, & Japan on September 28, 2010, UK and France instead it was later dropped Monday, October 4

DIANA KING SCHEDULE TO PERFORM IN JAMAICA WIH BABYFACE

R&B artist Kenny Edmonds, popularly known as Babyface, is expected to bring the National Indoor Sports Centre alive on November 13, at a concert billed, Spend an Evening with Kenny 'Babyface' Edmonds. His special guest will be Diana King.

The concert is one in a series of activities which will be held during The United Way of Jamaica Week planned for November 8 to 14, and which ends months of celebration of the organisation's 25th anniversary in Jamaica.

CHAKA DEMUS

INTERNATIONAL recording artiste Chaka Demus, one half of the deejay-singer recording duo Chaka Demus and Pliers, is recovering in a Kingston hospital after a major surgery.

Reports coming out of Jamaica stated, the deejay went to the Andrews Memorial Hospital last Tuesday for a routine check-up in preparation for an upcoming European tour. However, the attending physician immediately realised that the deejay was bleeding internally, and arranged to have a team of specialists perform emergency surgery.

RAGGA LOX - STEPPING INNA BABYLON

Album "Stepping Inna Babylon"

The true essence of Reggae music was re-captured on this 11-track masterpiece. In a time when reggae music is so troubled, here comes an album that bring us back to a time when reggae represents roots reality and culture.

The album is mostly produced by Fabian "Goldy" Francis, for Undeniable Records in Jamaica, but also features productions from New Creation Records, Atlanta and Jungle Productions, Ethiopia. Guest artists are Richie Spice, Lutan Fyah, Mikey General and Ethiopian singer Jah Lude.

SIR TOMMY'S - REGGAE LEGEND

HOWARD MAPP a/k/a Sir Tommy's was born in Jones
Town, Kingston, Jamaica. He spent his earlier years in Maxfiled Ave.

At the early age of 9 whilst living on Brotherton Ave., dances were kept in the yard in where he lived. It was here Sir Tommy's began to imitate the soundmen in that he made his own turntables and used bottle stoppers that were beaten out as vinyls. Each and every time the selector changed his vinyl he did likewise.

In 1971 at the age of 16, Sir Tommy's migrated to the United States with 13 seven inch records in hand. He attended school here in the United States but his love and passion for music was first and foremost.

In 1973, Sir Tommy's was the youngest youth in New York to play and own a sound outright. He played for numerous parties and it was here he kept the reggae flame burning in the five boroughs.

In the 80's numerous artists were on his set such as Mikey Jarrett, Danny Mangaroo, Sammy Levi, Daddy Marcus, Conrad, Scion Success, Louie Rankin, Alton Irie, Nicodemus, Willow Wilson, Briggie, Sammy Dread and Johnny Ringo to name a few. He played at the Galaxy Ballroom, Starlite, Biltmore, Tilden Hall, Trojan, Reggae Lounge and Day Care Center.

In 1985, Sir Tommy's ventured into production work. His first recording was with Trevor Junior, "Crack No Dash", "Cool Profile" and "When Your Are Down". He opened his recording studio in April of 1991 and produced artists like: Little John, Teddy Brown, Pinchers, Lloyd Hemmings, Tony Tuff, Wayne Smith, Philip Frazier, Ansel Meditations, Sugar Minott, Michael Palmer, Tuffiest, Johnny Ringo, Lady V, Lady P and his younger sister K-Vibes. His label has produced many albums thus far: Show Down Vol. 1., Show Down Vol. 2., Party With The Stars, Various Artist Vol. 1., Various Artists Vol . 2., 89 All Stars, Freedom Sound All Star, Best Of The Magnificent Seven, No Stone - Little John, Christmas Season, King Of The Road, 1990's Volume 1, 1990's Volume 2.

Sir Tommy's was honored by Reggae A.M.P.P.S (Artists, Managers, Producers, Promoters & Songwriters) on June 26, 2010 For Distinuguised Services in Reggae Music Industry.

Today, Sir Tommy's is still producing in his studios and has his following when he plays at events in New York.

2 YEARS GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN - ALTON NEHEMIAH ELLIS, OD.

ALTON NEHEMIAH ELLIS, OD, (Sep. 1, 1938- Oct. 10, 2008) also known as one of the innovators of rocksteady was born September 1, 1938 and grew up in the Trench Town District. Alton came from a musical family and learned to play the piano at an early age. In school he excelled in music and sports.

Alton loved to dance and competed in the Opportunity Hour. Having won many competitions, he turned to singing. In 1959, Alton partnered with Eddy Perkins and formed a duo Alton & Eddy. That same year they recorded a song that was written by Alton “Muriel” this song became a hit for the duo. After much recognition for their hit that was produced by the late Coxsone Dodd, they went on to record a few more songs at Studio One and for Vincent Chin on the Randy's label. Thereafter, Perkins left for the United States and Alton remained in Jamaica.

When Alton was layed off of his job he took his music career more seriously and formed a new duo with John Holt. When Holt moved joined The Paragons, Alton formed another group and called them The Flames. The group consisted his brother Leslie Ellis, David "Baby G" Gordon and Winston Jarrett. Alton recorded songs for Treasurer Isle, like "Girl I've Got a Date", "Cry Tough" and "Rock Steady" which were all big hits.

During the late 60's and early 70's recorded to big hits “Deliver Us” and “Back To Africa”. In 1967 he toured England with Ken Boothe and Studio One's band called Soul Vendors. Around this same time Alton began to produce his own records, including "My Time Is The Right Time" and "The Message".

In 1972, Alton made his base in England. From 1980's up to 2000's he continued to record and perform regularly. 2004, he was awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaica government in recognition of his achievements. 2006, he was inducted into the International Reggae And World Music Awards Hall Of Fame that was kept in New York at the Apollo Theatre. In December 2007, Alton was admitted to a hospital in London, England for treatment - cancer of the lymph glands. After receiving chemotherapy Alton returned to performing.

On Wednesday October 8, 2008 news was circulating saying that Alton was hospitalized, the following day the news then stated that he had passed. Alton died on October 10, 2008 at the Hammersmith Hospital in West London, England of cancer. He was the older brother of the late Hortense Ellis and the father of more than twenty children including Noel Ellis and Christopher Ellis, who are both reggae singers in the UK. A service was held in the celebration of his life on November 3rd, 2008 in attendance: his family, music industry insiders, fans and government ministers. Tribute performances came from Ken Boothe, Judy Mowatt, Carlene Davis, George Nooks and Tinga Stewart to name a few.

To Noel, Christopher AND other siblings this one is for you all:

To me your father Alton N. Ellis, OD was a musical giant. He truly touched our hearts in the reggae world. I feel very honored to have known him and thoroughly enjoyed his company whenever he visited our studio while he was here in New York.

To all who loved this man and his music, I say keep the fire burning. Alton might be gone but NEVER FORGOTTEN.

DAVID ROWE STATED THAT IT WAS BUJU BANTON WHO APPROACHED THE INFORMANT ABOUT COCAINE

In his opening statements in the cocaine trial of Mark ‘Buju Banton’ Myrie, his attorney David Oscar Markus, said the only thing his client was guilty of was “talking too much”. As the case unfolded, the world heard how much “talk” it was as tapes were played of the reggae superstar loosely serving up his most confidential secrets to a man he had met on a flight from Madrid to Miami.

Tapes were played of Buju telling the informant that he smuggles diamonds from Africa to Europe and that while he funds cocaine deals, he doesn’t actually get involved.

Speculation has been rife that the informant, Richard Alexander, who Buju Banton met on that ill-fated flight, had been strategically placed next to the reggae artiste on the plane for the specific purpose of entrapping him.

However, attorney-at-law, David Rowe, who has been overseeing the case on behalf of several media houses in Jamaica, says there is no evidence to support that school of thought.

According to Rowe, the transcripts show that it was Buju who actually approached the informant about cocaine and not the other way around.

“The initial contact was made on a flight from Madrid to Miami … it was Buju who approached the informant. They are on the plane drinking red wine and Buju asks, ‘Do you know who I am? I am Buju Banton, the big reggae superstar.’ And after that the conversation went from his stardom to his ability to engage in the sale of cocaine. That’s what the tapes said.” Prof. Rowe told Sharon Gordon and Bro Carlyle last Thursday night on their programme. “Buju left his number on a napkin for the guy to keep in contact with him,” Prof Rowe added.

He added, “The informant is a Colombian … he does Colombians, he doesn’t normally do Jamaicans.”

However, since his job is that of informing on cocaine deals, when Buju told the informant his story, Johnson did his job, Professor Rowe pointed out.

When Rowe made this revelation on the programme, the listeners in the chat-room went berserk. They protested Buju’s innocence. He again infuriated the chat-room when he added, “The law in the US is extremely blind, it doesn’t really care that Buju Banton is a reggae superstar from Jamaica”.

Rowe defended himself by pointing out that in addition to the fact that doesn’t know Buju Banton and had nothing to gain, the transcripts have been made public and anybody can check them.

“Buju,” he emphasized, “ made some very damning statements out of his own mouth on the tape. And he has a song, Driver, in which he says it all.”

MUSICALLY SPEAKING

Reggae's living legend and survivor of The Wailers Fame consisting of Robert Nesta Marley O.M., Winston Hubert McIntosh, Neville O'Riley Livingston C.D. pka Bunny Wailer has on behalf of Tuff Gong Records Ltd and The Wailers, been involved in the process of reclaiming the copyrights and sound recordings in over 1300 Wailers Songs from 1962 to the present, intentionally to compile and represent a series of Luxury Collector’s Edition of Boxed Sets titled ‘The Wailers Legacy Series’.

Volume 1 of the Series which incorporates 117 Songs of The Wailers along with Musically Speaking Volume 1, 2 & 3 a professional history of The Wailers written and narrated by Bunny Wailer is currently in the market, compiled during and over the period from 1995 to its release in 2005.

This coincides with the 35 Years expiration period of copyrights that allows for artists since 2003 to reclaim ownership of their songs ahead of the 50 Year expiration of associated rights in sound recordings, when they go into Public Domain.

It also stands to clarify the failure of the Marley Estate in their attempt to reclaim and revert the rights of Bob Marley & The Adopted Wailers in the recent lawsuit filed in the New York Southern District Court against UMG which ruling is questionable by Bunny Wailer, the survivor of The Wailers as it concerns Work For Hire.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JUNIOR DEMUS 10/6/10

Conrad McNish a/k/a Junior Demus was born in St. Mary, Jamaica, West Indies. Junior Demus is known for his gruff, gravel-voiced chants and jokes that he can give at the drop of a hat. He is also known to draw an audience in.

Junior is a legend in his place of birth Jamaica, a fixture in Brooklyn, New York and its dancehall scene. He is also a very warm and friendly individual. One of his favorite quotes/jokes whenever he meets up with people "stress can kill you, you can't hold it in or it will give you cancer, let it out" then laughs and walk away.

"When Me Come" released in 1991 was Demus' first single. 1994, Luke Records released Demus' debut full-length album, Bad Fowl. Some of the tracks from this album are "Come Quick," "Son of a Gun," and "Hold Me Down." He has also recorded a number of other singles, including "One Master," "Good Over Evil," and the popular number "Cabin Stabbin," which he completed with Super Cat and the late Nicodemus. They also worked together on the album The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Crazy for Sony Music in 1994.

Some of his other known songs are:
"Boy ah boy and man ah man"
"No man no rough no man no tough"
"Ruff neck chicken"
"Shot mek u riddle" (this was in the Dancehall Queen movie)
"Johnny Bop"

Demus has lent his talents on several dancehall and reggae compilation albums filled with hard hip-hop tunes by artists like the Frisco Kid, Wicka Man, Foxy Brown, Rob Symeonn, Sugar Minott, Sluggy Ranks, and many other artists.

Happy Birthday, Junior Demus.

THE WAILERS/TUFF GONG RECORDS LTD./COPYRIGHT REVERSION

This was to be posted weeks ago. Sorry for the lateness.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE WAILERS/TUFF GONG RECORDS LTD./COPYRIGHT REVERSION

The agreement that has been referred to and relied on by the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 08-06143 that denied the return of copyrights to the Marley Family, and inferred that Robert Marley’s solo contract and The Wailers group contract with Island Records was ‘Work For Hire’ is in direct contravention with the facts and history of The Wailers. This information can be supported by the legion of published books and recorded interviews that have been done to date.

The Wailers, Robert Marley O.M., Winston McIntosh and Neville Livingston C.D. have since 1964 entered into a series of formal recording contracts as Recording Artists and Writers since that time and subsequently as solo Recording Artists since 1974, starting with
• Jamaica Recording & Publishing Company/Studio One,
• Wail ‘N’ Soul ‘M’ – the first independently owned label for The Wailers,
• Upsetters/Lee Perry a Joint Venture and
• Danny Simms/JAD where in this instance only Robert Marley & Peter Tosh signed on,
• Chris Blackwell/Island Records where the world knows the story of the group being given $4000 on ‘faith’ to go and record the Catch A Fire album.

• Tuff Gong Records Ltd & Tuff Gong Music - Solomonic/Tuff Gong Records Ltd where the group themselves owned and transferred their own recording and publishing interests

This judgment is coming forward in the general environment of 50 Years of Jamaica’s music industry where expiring copyrights are threatening some of the world’s major catalogs from such greats as Elvis Presley, The Beatles and certainly now The Wailers to revert to either the bands themselves and or Public Domain. This represents one of the greatest threats to the major record and publishing companies, their catalogs and dominance over the genre Reggae.

It is in this environment that this sudden revelation that Robert Marley in his solo career, contract and subsequent Estate with Island Records/Universal is suddenly being deemed a ‘Work For Hire Artist’, a clearly underhanded conspiracy, years in the making, to defraud not only Robert Marley but The Wailers collectively of their rights to the reversion of these copyrights and opens up a Pandora’s box of violations and breaches by Chris Blackwell/Island/Universal and their agents in this matter. This as the only caveat to the reversion of these rights is if the recorded work was done ‘Work For Hire’.

It is further interesting to note that in the 1992 lawsuit by Tuff Gong Records Ltd., challenging Tuff Gong International rights to trade outside of Tuff Gong Records Ltd. as owners of The Wailers Recordings and trading unchallenged in Jamaica and The Caribbean since 1973, without the negotiated interest of Neville Livingston C.D. and the Winston McIntosh Estate as co-owners, that a series of contractual agreements, reported in the various journalistic reports, during this period was done converting and transferring rights that involves The Wailers, bringing into breach attempts at settlement, that never in those negotiations indicated that The Wailers recordings and interests were transferred and converted to ‘Work For Hire’ during this time.

Solomonic/Tuff Gong Records Ltd. can clearly state that at no time in the history of The Wailers as a group or as solo artists with Island/Universal has ‘Work For Hire’ been associated with any business dealings. We have contacted our lawyers in Jamaica, USA and the UK to vigorously move forward with existing plans and negotiations to recover the copyrights of The Wailers, sue for various breaches of existing settlement agreements and for intentional interference with prospective economic advantage and to invoke the Berne Convention in the protection of all related rights in international territories outside of Jamaica.

Is Robert Nesta Marley and Bob Marley separate and apart or one and the same or does Robert Nesta Marley or his respected Estate own the trade name Bob Marley, if not who does?

Pato Banton: The Truth Revealed

A Pato Banton concert is an event not to be missed and an experience not to be forgotten.Positive Vibrations abound with a beat to keep you on your dancing feet, while Pato delivers a message that is food for the mind and soul. Many have considered his charismatic performance as live theatre where no show is alike and audience members become participants in the experience. Pato dialogues with the crowd on a range of topics including current day events and spiritual freedom while keeping the vibes upbeat and fun! The direction of the concert is totally based on the feedback Pato receives from the audience as there is no fixed set list. Many have said that the positivitygenerated from the stage has changed their lives forever. Sometimes Pato invites his fans to join him in a prayer circle after the show, where some have cried while sharing their stories of contemplated suicide, isolation after losing a loved one, struggles with substance abuse and how their personal connection with Pato has given them the strength to “Stay Positive” & “Never Give In.”The following Pato Banton story charts his rise from the most disadvantaged of circumstances in his youth, through a long and successful career as a world renowned reggae legend, back to his roots with a commitment to work for the benefit of young people in his community, and finally on a mission to spread the “Good News” & “Positive Vibrations” to the “Now Generation”.

In The Beginning

Patrick Murray was born in London in 1961, and moved to Birmingham when he was 8 years old. Pato’s stepfather (Lester Daley) was a DJ fresh from Jamaica and the house in which they lived became the weekend night spot for the local community. Pato was the lookout for these illegal parties, working on the door from the age of 9. In his early teens Pato started to gain his musical foundation on his stepfathers’ sound system called V-Rocket, from helping set up the equipment at first to later selecting the music and trying his skills on the microphone. Patrick would stay up all night entertaining the masses and was given the name Patoo by his stepfather. (The name derives from a wise night owl in Jamaica, that stays up all night, calling “patoo, patoo.”)

By the age of 16, Ranking Pato became well known around Birmingham and would get regular work from various leading sound systems across the city. Within a short space of time, Pato became the number 1 MC in Birmingham, winning the title seven years in a row. At the age of 19 while working for Sufferer Sound System, Pato was invited to join a local roots reggae band called Crucial Music. Within a year Pato became the band leader, mc, singer/songwriter and manager, taking the band on tours of the UK and Europe. Pato’s first recording was a double A sided single with Crucial Music entitled “All Night Raving & Sensimilla.” After five years, Pato’s notoriety as a British MC outgrew the popularity of the band, and he was forced to move on……..

The Early 1980’s

During the early part of his career, Pato participated in a talent show where he was proclaimed the winner by judges Ranking Roger and Dave Wakeling of The English Beat. This culminated in the single, “Pato & Roger A Go talk”, which appears on the Beat’s gold selling album, Special Beat Service. Shortly thereafter Pato performed the hit songs, “Hip-Hop Lyrical Robot” and “King Step” on UB40’s Baggariddim and Little Baggariddim albums, which also featured the chart topping, “I Got You Babe” with guest artiste Chrissie Hines.

Pato’s first audition at Fashion Records impressed the producers so much that they instantly changed his name to Pato Banton. (In DJ circles a “Banton” is a heavyweight lyricist, thus in England, Pato became “The Banton”) His second single, “Allo Tosh Got a Toshiba” (recorded for Don Christie on Jamdon Records) reached number 3 in the independent reggae charts and launched a string of successful projects with Fashion Records, Greensleeves & Island Records. During this time Pato teamed up with top London MC Tippa Irie and under the guidance & management of GT Haynes they traveled around the world and recorded songs like, “Double Trouble”, “Dance Pon De Spot” and “Dem No Know Bout Pressure”. The Mid 1980’s

Looking for an avenue to express his conscious lyrics, Pato approached Neil Frasier at Ariwa Records and recorded his first album, “Mad Professor Captures Pato Banton” which is still regarded as an all time reggae classic!

Hungry for the feel of performing live, Pato joined up with a band of Birmingham’s top local musicians called the Studio 2 Crew. After a year of rehearsals and shows around the UK and Europe, Pato went on to record his second album “Never Give In!” It was at this time that Roberto Angotti, (a popular Radio DJ and pioneer of British Reggae, who hosted a show called The Reggae Revolution on LA’s top alternative rock station KROQ) was invited to the UK by UB40 to document the making of their “Geoffrey Morgan” album.Roberto was directed to check out a local club and spotted the talented Banton “mashing down the house!” After reporting his experience back to the band, UB40 keyboardist Mickey Virtue, gave Roberto a copy of Pato’s hit single “The Boss” and a contact to Pato’s Manager, GT Haynes.

This led to Roberto inviting Pato to the USA to work with local musicians on the live circuit and to record a song with the San Diego based rock band, Private Domain. While at KROQ, Pato wrote and recorded his parts to the track entitled “Absolute Perfection” and the song became an instant radio hit and reached No.1 in the music charts of Peru. With his popularity growing rapidly, Pato renamed his band “The Reggae Revolution” and began touring extensively. The buzz about Pato Banton’s live shows sparked the interest of IRS Records. A contract was signed and “Never Give In!” was released in America and then globally. Such classic songs as “Don’t Sniff Coke” “Handsworth Riot” “Gwarn” and “Settle Satan” established this recording to what many consider to be a timeless reggae masterpiece.

Pato’s third album, “Visions of the World” was released in 1989 and reflected the experiences and inner growth of a rising star. After tours with Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers, Burning Spear, Third World, Yellowman, Black Uhuru, Dennis Brown and Steel Pulse, Pato secured his place and respect as one of the best live performers in the reggae industry. His fourth album “Wize Up (No Compromise)” demonstrated Pato’s awareness of social issues and his strengthening spirituality. This recording featured the talents of Peter Spence, Drummie Zeb of Aswad, and guest vocalist David Hinds of Steel Pulse. Following this album and associated worldwide tours, Pato’s fith album, “Live and Kicking All Over America”, was released in 1992. This album demonstrated the immense loyalty of Pato’s fans and his charisma as a live performer. Pato’s sixth album was “Universal Love”, an inspiring collection of original soul stirring classics. This CD also featured “Go Pato”, inspired by his then manager, Makeda Dread, (of the World beat Center in San Diego) who took note of the fans’ chanting at his shows. This song became an instant hit, especially in South America where it became the number 1 and most played song in most countries. Hit After Hit - UK and Worldwide Chart Success For the 1994 compilation album “Collections”, Pato reunited with Ali and Robin Campbell of UB40 to record a cover of Eddy Grants single “Baby Come Back”. The song became a worldwide hit, achieving top 5 rating in over twenty countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Japan and across Europe. Pato Banton became a household name in the UK, as this single stayed at number 1 for four weeks in the British charts. Pato’s success continued with “Bubbling Hot”, another duet with Ranking Roger (which was also a top twenty hit in the UK.) In 1996 Pato joined forces with international pop icon Sting, on a reggae remix of “This Cowboy Song.” This track earned a top ten place in the UK and South American charts. While performing together live on the UK’s Top of the Pops, Pato and Sting were joined by rock star/comedian Jimmy Nail in a show-stopping performance, which led to Sting flying Pato and the Reggae Revolution on his private jet to perform with him on a nationally televised media event in Spain, which showcased other mega stars like Madonna and George Michael. Pato’s ninth album, “Stay Positive”, was a blend of classic reggae sounds with messages of peace, love and spiritual unity. From this album came the hit single “Groovin” (with Steve Morrison of the Reggae Revolution) and another successful collaboration with Sting, to re-make the Police classic “Spirits in a Material World”, which was included on the soundtrack of the Jim Carey movie “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls”. After six years of chart success and continuous touring, Pato decided to step away from the music business and continue on his path of Positivity. In the comfort of his own home studio, Pato acquired the help of long time friend and top producer Paul Horton to recorded his tenth album “Life is a Miracle”, which gained a Grammy Nomination and clearly defined the lyrical, musical, and spiritual growth of this outstanding artiste. Peter Gabriel’s organization, WOMAD, recognized Pato’s talents and invited him to headline a series of shows across the world. While on tour Pato was able to undertake music workshops for disadvantaged children in many cities and was actually allowed inside a maximum security prison in Sicily to lead a live music session with young offenders. This tour took Pato Banton & The Reggae Revolution to Europe, Australia, North & South America, Malaysia, Singapore & South Africa. But during this time Pato began to feel as though he had fulfilled his goals as an artist and felt guided to refocus his energies within his own community. Whilst touring America, Pato was informed that two of his sons had been shot in a drive by shooting. Although they both survived, this news confirmed in Pato’s mind that it was time to follow the call to scale down his career as a performer in order to put something back into his home town of Birmingham, England. 2000 – 2004 Working in the Community Within months Pato moved his Gwarn International Studios into a local community setting and created a small team of family and friends. Before the doors were even opened, the Principal of a local college invited Pato and all his staff members to set up an exciting new music department where they could offer courses in Sound Engineering, Vocal Tuition, Keyboard and Guitar lessons, DJ Mixing and Music Technology. Despite leaving school at an early age and with no qualifications, Pato took the opportunity while at Matthew Boulton College to advance his own education. He successfully completd a Level 1 & Level 2 course in Teacher Training and a course in Counseling Skills. During this same period Pato created a community network called Musical Connections, a program designed to put music equipment and computers into 16 youth centers (including centers for young offenders). He also trained many community tutors how to deliver basic courses in Music Technology to the young people that attended their centers. Next Pato set up a Community Classroom in the college so that young people who were talented or very interested in music, but had no formal qualifications had the opportunity to achieve a college education through music. With the support of Viv Taylor (the Head of Community Safety in Handsworth), Pato launched another community project called Muzik Links in 2001. The aim of this venture was to attract young people who were at risk, in care, or involved in crime and gang activities. This project gave hundreds of youths the opportunity to be involved in professional recordings, dance troupes and live performances. On many occasions Pato would volunteer his services as counselor, mentor or public speaker and by performing at local community events.By the end of 2002, Pato set up his own School of Musical Arts And Technology (SMAAT) and with his entire team relocated to the city center. Within weeks they were approached by South Birmingham College, who offered to employ the services of Pato and his co-workers. Pato agreed to a partnership and accepted the role of Assistant Director of Creative Studies. The success at the college combined with his role in community centers, high schools, a kindergarten and many prisons around the UK, led to Pato’s work becoming recognized across the region. In a partnership with the West Midlands Police Force called Project Ventara, it is noted that Pato’s involvement helped to reduce the number of gun related incidents across the city. Accordingly, Pato was nominated and awarded with the BBC’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication and commitment to positive change. In the same year Pato received the Black Music Award for Lifetime Achievement in recognition of his contribution to the British Music Industry and on the day the Birmingham Museum opened its doors to the Reggae Hall of Fame, Pato was formally honored alongside UB40 and Steel Pulse.

2005 A New Era A period of deep reflection and meditation left Pato feeling guided to continue his musical journey. In early 2005 Yahe Boda (a consecrated spiritual teacher and forerunner) invited Pato to do a short tour across America to “Gather the People in Praise.” This led to Pato phasing out his community commitments and with renewed energy to take on the challenge of recording the inspired double album entitled “The Words of Christ.” (a narrated album of Christ’s teachings taken from the Urantia Book) Poised to re-launch his career from the USA, Pato decided to reach out again to his close friend Roberto, and a partnership was formed. Although Pato had been away from the live concert circuit for many years, he had a place in the minds and hearts of the masses. Pato’s remarkable reputation as being a first rate showman was evidenced in the grand reception to his comeback and the rave reviews from the media and fans alike. After two short tours with Sol Horizon & DubCat, a twist of fate saw Pato join forces with the very popular, Mystic Roots Band (voted top Reggae Band by the Los Angeles Music Awards). After a successful tour starting in Hawaii and then across the mainland of the USA & Canada, Pato took the band into the studio and recorded the “Positive Vibrations” album. By 2009 and after many successful tours and projects, it was evident that it was time for Mystic Roots and Pato to go their separate ways. The band had become popular in many cities across the USA and it was time for them to spread their wings. During this crucial point of transition Pato was approached by Antoinette (Roots Dawtah) Hall, who persuaded Pato that it was time for him to have his own band who’s only agenda would be to support Pato’s mission to Spread The Good News across all 50 Sates Of America. Within 4 weeks the Now Generation Band was formed and the mission embarked upon. Now as an ordained minister Pato performs christenings, weddings, baptisms, prayer circles and hosts many spiritual gatherings, as he tours across America spreading the Good News! With plans for more tours, another album and future collaborations, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for such a truly inspirational artist.
